The Unbearable Lightness of Being
The Unbearable Lightness of Being
by Milan Kundera
Published in 1984 (in English)
Reflecting the philosophies of life divided into states of heaviness and lightness, Kundera embodies these two states by telling the story of four main characters.
The story takes place in Prague in the context of the events of 1968.
Tomas, one of the main characters, has his own perspective of life; his philosophy revolves around the idea of relationships and how sex has nothing to do with love.
However, a woman (Tereza) crosses Tomas path and things turn out since then. He breaks the rule and leaves his desire of freedom behind.
On the other hand, two characters ( Sabina and Franz) live a different story depending on their way of thinking.
With a well- paced plot, you will go through the lives of those characters, understanding the differences between them. The book carries the feeling of nostalgia and how people chase happiness in their own way.
